We had our lower level hardwood floors refinished in the middle of December. We made the mistake of sleeping upstairs, the same day the oil based polyurethane was applied. We all had severe headaches, and wound up opening all bedroom windows to let fresh air in. Depth of color- Oil based polyurethanes tend to bring out the depth of wood more than water based polyurethanes. Durability- Water based polyurethanes are just as durable as oil based polyurethanes, as long as the recommended number of coats are applied. A perfect choice for finishing everything from boats to outdoor furniture to garage doors, this transparent amber-tinted polyurethane is ideal for outdoor use.
Drying times vary based on circulation and temperature. Usually you can apply a new coat of water-based polyurethane for wood floors after three hours. This is a water-based polyurethane spray, which means that it dries more quickly and can be cleaned easily with some soap and water. You can use this spray on interior surfaces only, where it will offer a clear, semi-gloss coating that will prevent stains and scratches. One polyurethane spray can will cover up to 25 square feet of surface, and will dry within just half an hour.
Both said that I should apply varnish every couple years for general protection and to avoid fading. I would ask minwax if applying outdoor varnish would prevent any of the problems they think you will have. Nothing terrible will happen if you just leave it alone, other than it not lasting as long as an exterior product would. I would not put a topcoat on it because that will really impede and future re-staining. If I was you, I would either have the contractor replace the wood and use an exterior product, or just leave it and re-stain it when the time comes. Minwax said “you have to sand it out and then apply an exterior stain” which is absolutely not an option.
Why Should I Use Polycrylic Or Polyurethane?
It came down to the teak oil and the Minwax polyurethane . I was not a fan of how orange/dark the stain choices were, but picking a product intended for floors was probably a good choice. Lacquer is perhaps the most versatile, requiring no dilution to use with either brush or high-pressure sprayer. It tends to coat evenly and multiple layers can be applied while waiting for the first coat of oil-based polyurethane to cure.
If you decide to paint it on with a brush, the application process only becomes more difficult. Spraying polyurethane allows you to achieve far more accurate results. When you paint polyurethane with a brush, there is a much greater chance of creating bubbles on the polyurethane surface. You also have to be incredibly careful when brushing, as there is always the possibility of leaving brush marks and bumps in the finish. You could also trap moisture in the polyurethane when brushing incorrectly which will result in a cloudy finish. Choosing to use polyurethane spray removes these difficulties.
Number Of Coats
Finally, if money or cost-effectiveness is a concern, polycrylic is usually less expensive than polyurethane is. Large surfaces are better when coated with polyurethane. This makes the coating consistent across the surface. You can follow a general method of applying polycrylic over paint by first clearing the surface from dust and debris, and then sanding it with sandpaper. Remove the dust after sanding and use a thin layer of polycrylic with brush or polycrylic spray paint. After it has dried and cured, sand it and apply two more layers.
- Best of all, applying polyurethane doesn’t require spray equipment and is a job you can easily do yourself.
- So, if you’re going to go though the hassle of refinishing your floors, I recommend doing it right so it last longer.
- If the surface is not prepped properly, colored oils can highlight imperfections in the surface preparation.
You can easily use this product to spray over furniture and wood finishings – making DIY and home renovation projects much easier to manage. When sprayed over wood, you get an extremely durable protective coating. It can be sprayed over finished minwax vs varathane polyurethane or unfinished wooden surfaces and is suitable for use over a variety of wood types. Not only does it add a great layer of long-lasting protection, but it also enhances the natural beauty of the wood underneath thanks to its shiny clear finish.
Finishing your wood floors with polyurethane isn’t rocket science, but it IS hard work. Applying the product requires a combination of ability and knowledge. Before you brush on the polyurethane, soak the brush in mineral spirits. This will displace the air caught between the bristles, so it doesn’t create bubbles once you start applying the polish. Gently brush it across a piece of newspaper to dry it out before use.
Oil polyurethanes resists light-based discoloration but will itself add a tint to lighter woods. For this reason, polycrylic gets our vote for the best color control in both sunny and shaded rooms. There’s no point trying to decide who has the cheapest cans when the true cost lies in the application. Oil-based polyurethane is perhaps the cheapest to apply, requiring only a good natural bristle brush. However, as it penetrates the wood, it makes an excellent companion to floor wax or other top-coat finishes. Its consistency is perfect for both brushing and applying via low pressure sprayer, making it easier to apply.
This is why you want to find a polyurethane that looks good. Typically, polyurethane is clear, complementing the color of the wood, especially when using water-based products. However, some brands offer a handful of colors if you want to change things up a bit. This product is designed for interior wood minwax vs varathane polyurethane products including furniture, cabinetry, floors and wood trim. It can be used on either finished or unfinished wood and provides a clear gloss that allows the natural beauty of the wood to show through. This clear coating also protects the wood from drying out and protects it from stain and scratching.
It allows you to apply even coatings over difficult to reach areas and strangely shaped contours. It also removes the risk of things like brush marks or strange surface textures. Spraying polyurethane will involve a couple of extra steps and probably more coatings than brushing it on. It goes on smoothly, dries fairly quickly and provides a beautiful gloss finish. It’s formulated using a fluoro micro additive that increases stain resistance and makes this stain easier to clean.
Or if you want a more weathered finish, see how to create a weathered wood gray finish, as well as my Weathered Wood Recipes eBook. This was my first time using Varathane’s Kona stain and I really like the color! It’s a very subdued, earthy brown tone with less golden highlights than some of the similar Minwax colors. Special Walnut by Minwax is a lighter, brown walnut color. I found it to be similar to Early American but with more muted brown tones and no red tones.
And it gives me a more even finish coat when I’m above anything from a semi gloss up. As far as warbirds having a shiny finish I think that’s up to the pilot himself some like it some don’t I happen to like it especially in certain colors . After this project was complete we found out that “clear” does not mean “clear” in the world of stain, apparently. We were not aware of this as none of the local home improvement stores carried “crystal clear” in any product to even know that it existed. This is probably why our “clear” stain/finishes all seemed to alter the wood’s color. However, the ability of lacquer to soak into wood surfaces gives it a long-term edge that makes it the best choice for protecting antique furniture.
Coating wood with a hard finish, stained or not, will enhance the beauty of wood while providing complete durability. As you’re finishing each fresh coat during application, check your work with a bright side-light. Crouch down so you see the light reflecting off of the surface. This highlights imperfections, such as bumps, bubbles, ugly brush marks, and spots that you simply missed or where the finish is too light. You can fix these problems when the finish is still wet but not once it starts to set up.
Only when you apply pressure will the polyurethane leave the foam. I’m getting ready to seal my oak floors and I’ve been researching products also. I was seriously considering the polyurethane because of the fast drying time. We just don’t have time for the long curing time of the other products. And finally, if you do decide to recoat the floor in your room with polyurethane, it will ALWAYS need to be sanded first. Once the whole surface is screened, you can add a new coat of polyurethane.
However, a water-based polyurethane does not withstand heat well. As a result, the finish is not best-suited for kitchen tabletop. Instead, it can work well on desks, bookcases, and other wood surfaces that are not exposed to extreme heat. Water based polyurethanes are popular because they won’t yellow over time like an oil base will, and because of their low odor and easy cleanup. In the can, water based polyurethanes appear milky, but go on clear and remain clear. Water based polyurethanes also dry much faster than oil based, which allows you to apply multiple coats in a shorter amount of time.
